Four individuals stand out as pioneers of the early work that led to levodopa becoming a revolutionary new treatment for Parkinson's disease: Arvid Carlsson, Oleh Hornykiewicz, George C. Cotzias, and Melvin D. Yahr. All four were MDs. The first three had extra training in pharmacology, and in fact did their research in pharmacology.

MEMORIES T hroughout my career in Neuropsychopharmacology, Arvid Carlsson served as an inspiration, a scientific muse, and later as a mentor and friend. The inspiration was derived from the truly remarkable body of research that laid the foundation for his award of Arvid Carlsson’s research led to the recognition that Parkinson’s disease is caused by dopamine deficiency in some parts of the brain and subsequently to the production of Levodopa, an effective drug against this disease. Arvid Carlsson was active until 2018 in his company A. Carlsson Research at Sahlgrenska Science Park in Gothenburg.

Eftersom jag haft förmånen att tala med Arvid vid olika tillfällen genom åren är det roligt att dela glädjen över positiva resultat för A. Carlsson Research på Sahlgrenska Science Park. More than 50 years ago, the Swedish scientist Arvid Carlsson undertook basic research on the neurotransmitter dopamine that was not only rapidly converted into clinical investigation but also resulted within a few years in the first clinical treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD), a therapy that is still in wide use today. Arvid Carlsson discovered a neurotransmitter called dopamine in the brain and described its role in our ability to move. Arvid wanted to conduct research. In 1951, Very early in the 20th century, a chemical called dopamine was discovered, but no one really knew anything about it until a young Swedish research named Arvid Carlsson started to play with it.
